Melody Douglas, managing director of FosterTalk, said: “We had hundreds of entries which made it very hard for our judges, but this award for Gertrude and Keith is well deserved and we hope it inspires other people to consider becoming foster carers.” Mayor Lutfur Rahman said the award was richly deserved recogniton for the couple. He added: “We are incredibly proud of Gertrude and Keith winning this prestigious award. “They have turned around the lives of so many children over the years.” The awards were presented by the minister for children and families, Edward Timpson, and TV chef Lorraine Pascale, who was herself a foster child. G e r t r u d e a n d Ke i t h Tummings have looked after 28 children with disabilities over the last 18 years. Gertrude said: “I was really pleased when I heard about the award. “For me, fostering is about giving the best of care to the children. I don’t see their disability – only the need to care for and nurture them.” Mr and Mrs Tummings were presented with the award for Outstanding Commitment to Foster Children with Disabilities at the FosterTalk Foster Carer Awards last Tuesday, October 21. They are foster carers with the council and were nominated by the fostering development team for the outstanding care they provide. Hundreds of others were nominated for the awards, established to mark the tenth anniversary of FosterTalk, a service which was set up to Gertrude and Keith Tummings with their award
