Injunction bans drug dealer from 3 estates BY JESSICA ODUBAYO RESIDENTS on a Poplar housing estate, who gave evidence to support an injunction against a drug dealer causing problems in their area, have seen him issued with a two-year ban. Housing association Poplar Harca obtained the injunction against the 23-year-old dealer, who was well known for his criminal activities on the Aberfeldy Estate. In addition to dealing drugs, he was known in the area for intimidating residents and using property for criminal activities. The court order has a power of arrest and exclusion attached to it, which bans the drug dealer from Aberfeldy, Brownfield and Teviot estates as well as Chrisp Street Market. In granting the order, the judge at Bow County Court commended Poplar Harca‘s anti-social behaviour and police teams for their effective work. Jamie Lock, head of anti-social behaviour at Poplar Harca, said: www.gassaferegister.co.uk “This result sends a strong message to those involved in crime within Poplar Harca properties and areas that we will not tolerate this type of activity. “This was a success for partnership working and could not have been achieved without Poplar Harca officers, our police team and most importantly the residents working together. I hope this will encourage other residents to report anti-social behaviour issues to us. “Our combined ASB and police team will tackle anyone who threatens our residents’ safety.” Thousands of fires Last year there were more than 8,000 fires in London caused by rubbish, a large number were started deliberately. www.london-fire.gov.uk Property Be alert to risks of rubbish fires THE fire brigade is urging residents to dispose of rubbish correctly to avoid the potential for fires. Last year there were more than 8,000 fires in London caused by rubbish, with a large number of them started deliberately. Dumped furniture, car tyres, scraps of wood, old mattresses and cardboard boxes are all potential fire hazards – and a magnet for arsonists. London Fire Brigade has reduced the number of rubbish fires over the years and aims to keep the figures going downwards. Most of the fires can be avoided by clearing up waste. If you have furniture or large amounts of rubbish, don’t dump it on the street. And if you spot rubbish that could be a potential fire risk, contact the council. Other fire brigade tips to reduce the risk of rubbish fires include: ■ only put rubbish out when it’s due to be collected ■ keep rubbish away from doors and windows ■ keep exits and escape routes clear of rubbish ■ report fly-tipping to the council. Contact the council if you have any large items that need to be removed – call the Streetline number on 7364 5004 or email generalenquiries@tower hamlets.gov.uk Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer Sign up for gas check reminder RESIDENTS are being urged to sign up for a free reminder service to make sure they have an annual gas safety check. Run by the Gas Safe Register, you can sign up at www.stay gassafe.co.uk In the last three years, one in six British homes inspected by the register has been found to have an unsafe gas appliance which could have caused a gas fire, explosion or carbon monoxide poisoning. It has also issued tips for staying gas safe in 2014: ■ Have your gas appliances serviced and safety checked at least every 12 months. ■ Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer when having gas work carried out in your home – call Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or go to www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk ■ Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm to alert you if dangerous levels of CO are present in your home. ■ If you smell gas or think there might be a gas leak, call the free 24-hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999. Register spokeswoman Sarah Hill said: “Poorly fitted and badly maintained gas appliances pose a real threat to people’s homes and lives.” This could not have been achieved without Poplar Harca officers, our police team and most importantly the residents.” Jamie Lock Rubbish can be a magnet for arsonists Community website wizards boosted by £2,000 grant TWO residents who are developing a website which champions the positive aspects of living in Tower Hamlets have received £2,000 of funding from Tower Hamlets Homes to start their project.
