The father-of-two was selected by international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for the new scholarship programme and was the only Londoner among the six candidates from across the country to join the inaugural year of the scheme. Steve receives many benefits and opportunities, including £3,500 towards studying for his undergraduate degree Steve Lewis is closer to getting his dream job in law (LLB) at Birkbeck, University of London. Steve, 43, said: “The scholarship is life-changing – it is a dream come true. I love the subject and what I am possibly able to do for other people, and one of my personal aims is to get more black youth into the legal profession.” As part of the application process, candidates met Stephen Lawrence’s mother Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon, a particularly emotional moment for Steve: “Being a black man, Stephen’s murder especially touched a nerve with me. Londoners have grown up with what happened surrounding his death. “I am determined to work hard and become a lawyer and I would like to give back.” Steve left school at 16 and worked in various jobs, including as a baggage handler at London City Airport and as a mobile phone salesman, before deciding to pursue his interest in law. Aged 41, he began a parttime certificate of higher education in legal methods at Birkbeck in Stratford, beginning his full-time undergraduate degree in law in 2012. Steve is urging others to follow his example: “There are ways to achieve that don’t involve crime. “Many people are saying I am an inspiration and I am encouraging them to think about studying.” Daniel Monk, reader in law at Birkbeck’s School of Law, who is one of Steve’s lecturers, said: “Steve Lewis is an excellent student and the scholarship is having a very positive impact on his progress. “His dedication is impressive, and he is a powerful example of how you can begin studying and embark on a new career in your forties.” For further information about Birkbeck, University of London visit www.bbk.ac.uk TRAI TRAIN IN TO TEACH T IN IN LO LONDON ONDON N “The The best b est e course course i in n Londo London n to get get you you u qualif qualified fied as a teacher.” tea acher.” 56-58 East India Dock Road, London, E14 6JE www.cumbria.ac.uk/london The Duke of York (right) at the new centre A royal seal of approval THE Duke of York joined employers, education partners and volunteers for the opening of a new centre in Canary Wharf, for young people not in education or employment. Prince Andrew officially opened the centre run by City Gateway, during National Apprenticeship Week earlier this month. Apprentices who have found work through City Gateway’s partnership with the Evening Standard Ladder for London campaign received awards from the duke at the event. City Gateway chief executive Eddie Stride said: “Our partnership with the Ladder for London campaign has enabled us to place 332 young people into life-changing apprenticeships with leading companies since the start of the campaign 18 months ago. An incredible 80 per cent of the young people have secured employment.” The centre in Mastmaker Road will offer training for over 400 young people a year, and support 300 into apprenticeships. The centre also has a number of social enterprises providing work experience and employment opportunities as well as children and families services to support learners and their families into employment.
