The new building Swinging Sunday at Chrisp Street CHRISP Street Market in Poplar will be rocking to the sounds of the 1950s when it hosts a swing event on Sunday, June 29. Swing East promises some of the top acts from the UK swing circuit as well as retro cars, a vintage market and street food. Inspiration for the event came from resident Nelson Piperides, who is a caretaker at housing association Poplar HARCA. Nelson is a regular on the dance floors and the decks at many swing and rock ’n’ roll events and was keen to see something similar in Poplar. “I thought it would be a great fit for Chrisp Street – who wouldn’t want a 1950s party in a 1950s market?” Nelson said. “We want to encapsulate the spirit of the early 1950s, when Chrisp Street Market was created, bringing together the fashion, the cars, the dance styles and, of course, the music, from swing to the birth of rock ’n’ roll!” The marketplace will host three bands throughout the day, all handpicked by Nelson. Entertainment will run from 12 noon until 6pm and entry is free. The drugs were discovered when Partnership Task Force (PTF) officers entered a flat in Saxon Road, E3, on June 11. Officers forced entry and found a quantity of cannabis in the living room. They also noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from outside the flat and decided to search the suspended plasterboard ceiling. Hidden under the ceiling, they discovered a large haul of cannabis and suspected class A drugs. A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of controlled drugs and was taken to an east London police station where the investigation continues. Police borough commander Drugs were found hidden under a suspended ceiling Dave Stringer said: “This is another excellent example of how officers from the Partnership Taskforce within Tower Hamlets act quickly and robustly to deal with drug dealing and drug misuse. We are committed to eradicating such crime in the borough, cleaning up our streets and making our communities safer.” Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Drug dealing and misuse are key concerns for residents and tackling these problems is one of my top priorities. “We invested in the Partnership Taskforce specifically to focus on drug dealing and the anti-social behaviour that goes with it.” Cllr Ohid Ahmed, cabinet member for community safety, said: “This recent success shows that we are continuing the fight against drug dealers, in partnership with the police.” The Partnership Task Force is made up of 34 police officers funded by the mayor and six officers funded by the police. Residents can report drug dealing and misuse to the police non-emergency number on 101, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In an emergency always dial 999. Island memorial ceremony A PERMANENT plaque is to be installed in memory of the 44 people who died during a bombing raid on the Isle of Dogs in World War II. And residents are invited along to the ceremony at Bullivant’s Wharf off West Ferry Road on Saturday, July 5 at 12 noon to pay their respects. The victims were in a communal air raid shelter when it was hit during the bombing on March 19, 1941.
