About 200 people visited the gardens from London and further afield. One couple travelled from Dorset and another from the Midlands. The Gypsy Orchestra kept everyone entertained with its lively and mournful melodies drawn from Eastern Europe. Ray Newton led another of his local history walks and talks. We even had a visit from a tuk-tuk – a motorised rickshaw from Calcutta – decorated with sparkling banners and transformed into a white bison! Also remember to feed and water regularly. A succession of sowings can still be made of carrots, radishes, lettuce and other maincrops. Now is a good time to sow autumn and winter crops, such as turnip, in readiness for Christmas. Whatever your plans, happy gardening! By Jane Sill Three remain in race to build Olympic homes BY STAFF REPORTER THREE bidders have been shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process to build hundreds of new homes on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Two new neighbourhoods are planned – Sweetwater in the south west of the park near the Copper Box Arena, where 650 homes are proposed, and East Wick, where 870 homes will be built near Hackney Wick. The mayor of London and the London Legacy Development Corporation announced plans in July 2013 to accelerate the development with a view to completing it in 2023, six years ahead of the original masterplan. The three bidders –Grainger; Mace, Argent and Peabody; and Places for People and Balfour Beatty –were chosen from a long-list of six. The Legacy Corporation will select a preferred bidder later in the autumn. The neighbourhoods will include private rental and affordable homes, and new primary schools. A health centre is also proposed for Sweetwater. Rosanna Lawes, executive director of development, said: “We are entering the most exciting stage in the transformation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. “Work is under way on the first new neighbourhood, Chobham Manor, and our plans for a new civic quarter with high quality educational and arts institutions are taking shape.” The entire Legacy Communities Scheme for the area will include up to 6,800 homes in five neighbourhoods.
