l hospital in Whitechapel Professor Mike Curtis and consultant Wendy Turner State-of-the-art imaging equipment has been installed Marie Ponomarenko with consultant Simon Holmes ‘I cannot thank them enough’ TWENTY-seven-year-old Marie Ponomarenko from Docklands says she cannot thank staff at the dental hospital enough, for treating her after she had a serious accident. Marie fractured her jaw and cheekbone and was nearly paralysed after damaging her vertebra during a fall while horse-riding on a holiday on the south coast in April. She had emergency care at the local hospital near to where she had the accident, and the rest of her care has been at the Royal London Dental Hospital. Simon Holmes, consultant in oral and maxillofacial surgery, carried out surgery and Dr Mital Patel corrected her front tooth. Marie couldn’t speak or eat solid foods and was in pain. At the dental hospital, she had her jaw and cheekbone operated on to put them back in line and her front tooth mended as it was cracked down the centre horizontally. She continues to wear a neck brace. Simon Holmes said without surgery, Marie faced the potential loss of her eating capacity, limited mouth opening, facial pain and deformity. “We found the nerve that moved her lip and isolated it, then fixed the jaw with miniplates and reconstructed her cheekbone,” he explained. “The operation was technically difficult, but the software at the dental hospital helped enormously.” Marie said: “I knew something was very wrong as a week after the accident my cheekbone and jaw didn’t look like they were in the right position and I couldn’t eat. “The treatment has been difficult, but the dental hospital staff have been very supportive and are doing such a great job. Simon in particular has always been there to answer any questions I have had, even by email. I cannot thank them enough.” Marie is writing a blog to show the progress of her treatment and to give hope to other women who experience sudden and severe facial trauma.
