Those living in houses can leave their trees on the boundary of their property on their garden waste/food waste recycling day. see below New life for old trees Last year around 500 trees were collected for recycling – they started a whole new life as compost. see below News Don’t forget to recycle at Christmas time BY SARAH MCLAUGHLIN RESIDENTS are being reminded that much of their festive waste – including Christmas trees, cards, boxes and paper – can be recycled. Around 30 per cent more waste is generated over Christmas and most of this can be put into the council’s recycling collection, including: wrapping paper (no foil or ribbon) Christmas cards and envelopes cardboard packaging (squash it down to make more room) food and drink cartons mixed paper glass bottles and jars Tower Hamlets social workers and residents Guy Sheenan, Rupert Franklin Lester, Kerie Anne, Mary Brodin, Sybil Cock ‘Inspirational’ social workers to share knowledge and build professional relationships. Bethnal Green resident Guy Sheenan, who is chair of the British Association of Social Workers, and Rupert Franklin Lester, a former social care reviewing officer for the council, played key organising roles with the Palestinian Union. Kerie said: “The dedication and skill of our Palestinian social work colleagues who work under the most difficult of circumstances was inspirational.” Brownfield Cabin Knit and Natter with their handmade gifts A MINCE pie eating competition, live music and performances formed part of the latest event in the month long Chrispmas series of festive celebrations hosted by Poplar Harca housing association. Alongside the regular market stalls in Chrisp Street Market, new traders sold crafts and gifts. And children (including Kaia, left, aged 4) got the opportunity to make tree decorations and brighten up the paving slabs with chalk paintings. Five competitors battled it out to see who could eat five mince pies in the fastest time. Andrew Ben-Salem, a member of Poplar HARCA’s youth empowerment board, won the competition. A TEAM of social workers and residents have returned from an international social work conference in the occupied Palestinian territories. Kerie Anne, from the council’s adoption support team, Kathleen Fitzpatrick, a residential social worker, and Sybil Cock, a retired teacher and co-ordinator of the Tower Hamlets Jenin Friendship Association, were among the contingent of 47 who came from the UK, visiting the region food and drinks cans plastic bottles, tubs and trays. Only real Christmas trees can be recycled and pots, soil and decorations should be removed. Christmas trees can also be taken to the reuse and recycling centre at Yabsley Street, E14. The centre is open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 6pm, and Bank holidays 9am to 4.30pm. Cllr Shahed Ali, cabinet member for environment, said: “The Christmas tree recycling collection is a simple way to dispose of your tree and make sure it is put to good use.” From December 25, recycling and waste collection will take place two days later than the normal collection day. From January 1, recycling and waste collection will take place one day later than the normal collection day. Collections return to normal during the week commencing January 5, 2015.
