Singer-songwriter Marc Almond and actress Anita Dobson headlined at the soldout event, at the church of St Botolph without Aldgate. Below: Rev Bernadette Hegarty Keep warm and save money too BY SAM GOUGH WITH Christmas coming and the cold creeping in, many residents are facing the worry of paying high energy bills to keep their home warm during the festivities. The council’s energy-saving scheme, T.H.E. Community Power, gives residents access to information and advice on how they can make their homes more energy efficient and save money on energy bills. It also helps to ensure they are getting the best value out of and joined together for a rendition of Drummer Boy. This year, Mildmay moved into a new, purpose built HIV hospital, which provides care, treatment and rehabilitation for people with complex HIV, related health issues. Kerry Reeves-Kneip, director of fundraising at Mildmay, said: “We are so grateful to all the artists who gave their time freely to perform so superbly in this joyful Christmas celebration for Mildmay.” their energy providers by joining up with the Londonwide campaign, The Big London Energy Switch. Using an auction-style system, energy companies put forward their most competitive rates, thereby reducing the cost to customers. The previous auction saw bespoke deals that were not available anywhere else in the market. Residents who sign up for the next auction could join the hundreds of households that are already saving an average of £150 a year. MAYOR Lutfur Rahman welcomed community leaders to a Christmas reception at the Town Hall on Friday, December 12. Faith and community representatives from the borough, together with local war veterans, joined the mayor for a pre-Christmas celebration. Sister Christine Frost and Reverends Alan Green and Bernadette Hegarty spoke about this special time of year. Mayor Rahman said: “As ever, I was delighted to meet with local faith and community leaders and representatives of some of our schools. Christmas is a time of year for reflection. It is also a time when our message about being One Tower Hamlets, is particularly resonant. I’d like to wish all residents and visitors to our borough a very merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.” Resident Tim Penrice said: “My monthly bills went down from £86 to £69. And I thought I had been canny getting the £86 deal. “The energy saving scheme was straightforward and simple to do, and every month I’m saving myself £17 which is half a week’s shopping.” The next auction is to be held on February 3, 2015.
