Last month the two members of Tower Hamlets Judo Club competed in the Welsh Open championships and produced gold medal winning performances. Then on December 13 they were back in action again battling for British titles at Sheffield’s Hallam Centre – and 16-year-old Olivia was the star of the show. Olivia is now British champion in both cadets and juniors age groups and, as a bright prospect for success on the international stage, she will be representing Great Britain next year at the European Championships and Youth Olympics. Olivia Piechota Leonardo de Moura Muniz Leonardo, 17, a Langdon Park College sixth form student and silver medallist from the cadets championships 2013, competed in the 66kg division. He started with great power, winning the first three matches before regular time by ippon and produced some remarkable take-downs. Leonardo went through to round three before narrowly losing to five-time British champion Eric Ham (Glossop) and the three-time British Champion Daniel Powel (Wolverhampton). After seven contests Leonardo finished in fifth place. In the Welsh championships, two weeks earlier, Olivia competed in both less than 44kg age categories, taking silver in the cadets – narrowly losing to Molly Harvey. She then met the same opponent in the juniors category and this time pulled off a stunning victory. The result meant Olivia retained her number one ranking. Leonardo competed in the junior under-21 66kg category. He stormed through elimination round, winning all four matches by ippon and his final contest against Eric Ham was the most thrilling and spectacular match of the day. After regular time there were still no points on the boards so extra time was required to decide the championship. Leonardo produced some remarkable throws to win, after which he was awarded a standing ovation. Soccer round-up Holders Hamlets keep cup dream alive REIGNING London Junior Cup Champions FC Hamlets booked their place in the quarter finals with a 1-0 victory over St Pauls Celtic. Hamlets almost took the lead within the first five minutes when a cross from Gilroy was met first time by Hoy, only to see his shot come off the woodwork. Hamlets then went ahead in the 19th minute when a big goal kick from Pyne found its way to Gilroy who controlled the ball and skipped past the Celtic central defender before finding Foster who side-footed into the goal. In the 26th minute, Hamlets’ defence allowed a Celtic’s striker to run on to a through ball, but Pyne reacted quickly to block the shot. The rebound fell to the striker again, whose shot beat Pyne but defender Baudrier was there to clear off the line with a diving header. The second half saw Hamlets apply plenty of pressure and, with 20 minutes to go, a Gilroy header hit the crossbar and the rebound went to With whose shot was cleared off the goal line. Borough went ahead just before halftime with a superb solo goal from Tony McDonald then a powerful Darrell Cox header put them 2-0 ahead. In a match where Hamlets paid the price for missing several chances, the east London side got back into the game three minutes after the Cox goal when Sodiq Ayinde headed home a free kick from just outside the box. The tall Hamlets team were always an aerial threat, but in the end they paid the price for not taking their chances.
