Some of the mus i c a l highlights on this year’s schedule include ‘alternative’ seasonal concerts from artists such as Siglo de Oro and vocal ensemble The Sixteen and Harry Christophers. Late night performances will feature the likes of the Choir of London and The Clerks. And the festival also plays host to family-friendly events including Winter Fayre on the Farm on Sunday, December 7. Held at Spitalfields City Farm, it will feature a market and a musical workshop. Many events at the Winter Festival are free; ticketed performances start at £5. Sounds of Light – on Sunday, November 2 – includes performances from Maher Zain and Raef & Harris J. Comedian, writer and lecturer Preacher Moss will be hosting alongside Na’eem Raza, presenter and head of fundraising at Human Appeal, which is organising the event. To book, visit www.humanappeal.org.uk Photo exhibition A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition looking at the lives of children and their families in some of the poorest areas of Europe has been announced by the V&A Museum of Childhood. Hidden Identities opens on December 20. The free display is a result of a collaboration with Hope and Homes for Children, an international charity working to prevent the breakdown of families. The museum in Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green opens daily from 10am-5.45pm. Parks and trepidation Be shocked, scared and spooked by hellish goings-on this Halloween BY SHALINA HUSSAIN SPOOKY surprises galore are in store at spine-tingling events to celebrate Halloween. The council will be staging Halloween fun days on Friday, October 31, at King Edward Memorial Park, Wapping and Bartlett Park, Poplar from 3.30-6.30pm. Join in ghastly games and weird and wonderful workshops, all led by curious characters from arts company Emergency Exit Arts. At King Edward Memorial Park in Glamis Road, visitors can enter a world of super science fiction with Space Invaders where zombie planets and alien experiments will be unleashed. Join in the party games at the Martian laboratory or the Black Hole nightclub, with DJ Chewbacca. Mr Recycle More, the council’s 20ft tall ambassador for recycling, will be on hand to give tips and advice on going green. There will also be creative workshops, face painting, bouncy castle and games for children. Monsters from the Deep will be the theme at Bartlett Park in Upper North Street where residents can plunge into an underwater world and immerse themselves in the ghost ship with gory face-painting and more ghoulish fun. And for anyone feeling brave enough, there are games at the captain’s table including the Unlucky Treasure Hunt. The council’s parks team will stage the annual Teeny Halloweeny event on Wednesday, October 29 at Mile End Play Park in Locksley Street from 12-4pm. Under-7s can take part in apple bobbing, spooky treasure hunts, scary storytellying and arts and crafts. At the Hub in Victoria Park there will be pumpkin carving on Monday, October 27, with creepy crafts the following day from 12-3pm. On October 31, young people can do battle with ghosts and ghouls in Victoria Park and Mile End Park with Ditch The Witch. Aimed at youngsters aged seven to 11, the tours will run between 6-9pm and last 30-40 minutes. Booking is essential and children must be accompanied by an adult. To reserve a place call 7364 1213. Comedy at Alice in Wilton’s Wonderland the Queen’s A FREE comedy night is being held at The Queen’s Head in Limehouse this Tuesday, October 21. Canadian comic Tanyalee Davis headlines, with support from Annabel O’Connell, Ben Clover, beatboxing comic Stefano Paolini, along with comedy sketch and acting duo Haiste & Lawrence. WILTON’S Music Hall is hosting a half-term run of performances based on the bizarre and imaginative offerings of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The new adaptation, led by Box Tale Soup, is suited to young children and features magical creations, handmade puppets, props and characters. The show, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, runs from October 29 to November 1. In support of the dates, a range of themed activities are being held in the historic music hall in Wapping. The bar will host an arts and crafts session, along with a game involving the Queen of Hearts. Meanwhile, before the main shows in the auditorium a game of inflatable flamingo croquet will be played. The 50-minute performances run at 2.30pm and 4.30pm in Wilton’s Music Hall, Graces Alley, E1. Tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for children, and the show is suitable for ages 4-plus, although younger children are also welcome.
