Connecting with a new generation “We’re trying to change politics for the better, to connect a whole generation of younger voters, so it’s really encouraging to have the backing of such a major business.” joe hall, no one ever told me about politics Doing the business Tower Hamlets College runs a number of professional level business and finance courses. www.tower.ac.uk Business news News in brief Smart headstart A TRAINING provider is calling on local businesses to help young people in the area get a headstart. Smart Training, based on the Isle of Dogs, said youngsters on the government traineeship programme were looking for unpaidwork placements so they can progress into the world of work. The programme is a combination of work experience and training which is designed to help 16- to 24-year-olds secure a job and build their confidence in the workplace. By offering them an opportunity of work experience, businesses will also benefit from a free pair of hands to help them for up to 16 hours a week over two or three days. If your business can help, call Smart Training’s placements team on 3700 4294 or email start@smart-training.com Step up to success A CANARY Wharf bank is offering scholarships to top students from underprivileged and under-represented backgrounds who are interested in finance. Credit Suisse runs the twoyear Steps to Success programme which offers young people internships from when they pass their A Levels plus tuition fees to support them through their university studies. Selection is based on academic excellence, leadership abilities and interest in the financial services industry – and students must have applied through UCAS for a place at university. Joe Hall, a member of crossparty campaigning group No One Ever Told Me About Politics, has created the Ask Amy app to provide jargon-free information to young adults aged 25 to 34. Users who download the app can submit questions about politics, no matter how simple or niche, and Amy will reply. He has already been awarded £1,000 start-up funding but needs more cash to develop the app. Joe, 35, presented his idea at Digi Factor, a fringe event at this year’s political party conferences, and Ask Amy won the support of judges and the crowd. Telecommunications company TalkTalk awarded Joe £1,000 to help develop the prototype. He said he was grateful for the funding and he has now launched the crowd funding campaign to raise more money. “We’re trying to change politics for the better, to connect a whole generation of younger voters, so it’s really encouraging to have the backing of such a major business,” he said Alexandra Birtles from TalkTalk said: “Ask Amy is a fantastic example of how technology can be used to engage people and communities, and make Britain better off. With the general election fast approaching this app is a great resource to keep people informed.” To view a demo of Ask Amy, visit the No One Ever Told Me About Politics You Tube page at https://www.you tube.com/watch? v=GnR1CjDWFPI TOWER Hamlets hairdressing student Raminta Petuchovaite (left) cut it with the best in the industry, by making it through to the final of the British Hairdressing Student of the Year competition.
