We trust you had a pleasant festive period and wish you all the best for 2015. In light of the devastating attacks in Paris two weeks ago, it is vital that we remain vigilant to potential dangers in our own capital city. We must work together to ensure that this kind of attack on our freedom does not happen on our streets. As the year begins we are pleased to report that the fear of crime among the community continues to fall. It is now at its lowest level for five years and down 11 per cent on the previous year. We have also found that knife crime across the borough is down for the fourth year running. This has been down to significant work by the Metropolitan Police with strong support from the council. These results demonstrate the hard work and determination to cut crime and anti-social behaviour by everyone who works in community safety at the council. The authority works effectively with partner agencies and police to help prevent crime and support victims. Our staff are well supported by Tower Hamlets enforcement officers (THEOs), who work successfully on the ground alongside the Metropolitan Police. THEOs have now been operating in the borough for five years. They continue to bring down the number of anti-social behaviour incidences taking place. They also prevented several drug dealers from operating over the festive period, with key support from our aptly named K9 sniffer dogs and their handlers. Andy Bamber A huge amount of credit must also be given to the council’s CCTV operators. Intelligence provided by the operators to police led to a staggering 783 arrests from January to December 2014. They continue to provide a valuable service in supporting police officers across the borough. Meanwhile, the latest round of our successful community safety ward surgeries and walkabouts – where members of the public can meet with police and council staff – are coming up to the halfway stage. That means our new mobile police office will soon have visited ten of the borough’s 20 wards. Thank you to all residents who have come along to tell us your concerns about anti-social behaviour and crime. These events continue to provide police, community support officers and THEOs with essential information so we can all work together to bear down on criminals operating in the area. Surgeries with the new borough commander, Andy Ewing, continue to be held fortnightly in each ward and then a walkabout takes place so officers can see troublesome hotspots for themselves. All residents are welcome to join us if they have any community safety concerns they would like to tell us about directly. To find out when we will be in your ward, visit bit.ly/1zezYr8 You can report any crime or anti-social behaviour concerns that you may have without attending our surgeries and walkabouts – call the non-emergency police phone number on 101.
