Rebekah Button, 26, is also training for two separate 5k runs, one in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and one for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which her daughter Sophia, now 18 months, attends for consultant appointments. “Sophia was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease (CHD) at just six weeks old. There are many forms of CHD and unfortunately Sophia’s type (pulmonary stenosis) can’t be traced until the child is born and begins to develop,” said Rebekah, who lives in Jamaica Street. “Upon finding out, our world felt as though it was crumbling around us. Our perfect little girl was ill and there was nothing we could do to change that. Then began the arduous hospital appointments, the Cash for end of life care ST Joseph’s Hospice near Bethnal Green is one of seven UK organisations to receive a share of £800,000 from the government’s Social Action End of Life Fund to tackle loneliness and isolation. The £130,000 funding will enable the hospice to run its Compassionate Neighbours, East London project, using volunteers to develop social networks in the Bengali community in Tower Hamlets and other communities in Hackney and Newham. Michael Kerin, hospice chief executive, said the funding would support people to remain as independent as possible when facing the end of their lives. “The scheme will also help to make hospice care better known among communities in these areas who don’t traditionally access our services,” he said. To find out more about volunteering for the scheme, call 8525 6000 or visit www.stjh.org.uk Pioneering DNA study BARTS Health NHS Trust is among six London hospital trusts which are launching a pioneering study using patient’s DNA to create personalised treatment for people with cancer and rare diseases. Patients at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, and across the trust, will be offered the opportunity to provide blood samples for genetic analysis. Scientists hope that looking at the data on such a large scale will reveal common conditions and symptoms that could be associated with particular human DNA, and could help explain why some patients may respond to treatment, while others may not. It is believed that the ethnic diversity of patients in east London – where the trust’s six hospitals are based – will prove particularly useful in the project’s findings. Professor Finbarr Cotter, clinical director for pathology at Barts Health, said: “This is a great opportunity to revolutionise the care of our patients. “From this project, we will start to unravel the real basis of cancer and rare diseases, and begin to use advanced DNA analysis to improve the diagnosis and treatment options for patients.” 19 – 25 JANUARY 2015 N E W S F R O M TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 3
