Parents from the John Smith Children’s Centre, Stepney Dozens brush up on parenting skills BY IAN READ NINETY-FOUR people graduated from parenting courses in Tower Hamlets last month. In a ceremony at the Professional Development Centre in Bethnal Green, the deputy speaker of the council, Cllr Khales Uddin Ahmed, presented them with certificates recognising their efforts. The programmes, including Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities, Teen Triple P and Emotional First Aid, are run by the council in schools and other venues. Demand is so high, there are now waiting lists for places. The council delivered more than 80 programmes in 2014, with 600 parents successfully completing them and with more than 1,800 children and young people benefiting. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Well done to all these parents on completing these courses. “None of us has to pass a test to become a parent, we all just try to do our best, so it is wonderful to see these parents seeking professional expertise to hone their parenting skills.” Cllr Gulam Robbani, cabinet member for education and children’s services, added: “These courses offer practical tips and techniques to help parents with what can sometimes be the most difficult job in the world. “The council wants every child to fulfil their potential and parenting courses can be a great way of achieving that.” The courses allow parents to share their experiences of bringing up children, and learn to deal with challenging behaviour and manage conflict. For more information on the courses, call the family support service on 7364 6398 or email parenting@tower hamlets.gov.uk FIRST LESSON FREE 5 LESSONS £56 *includes free lesson PRIVATE DRIVING LESSONS 0794 710 9783 Approved Qualified Instructor With over 5 years experience Pass Plus Available Moving Pictures Short Films Screening How are you feeling today?
