A Levels Hard work has paid off BY JESSICA ODUBAYO TOWER Hamlets College students were celebrating after their hard work helped them achieve the grades they need to go to university or into work at some of London’s leading companies. The college recorded an increase to 28 per cent of A Level grades at A*, A or B in contrast to the national trend. A hundred per cent pass rate was achieved in 15 subjects including business, computing, economics, English literature, English language, government and politics, Italian, sociology and Spanish. Overall, the college maintained its strong track record with a 92 per cent pass rate. Principal Gerry McDonald said: “I am delighted by the performance of our students and the results they have achieved. It is testament to their hard work and also to the skills and experience of our teaching staff.” Tanvir Ahmed, 18, gained an A* in maths, A in further maths and B in physics. He plans to study mechanical engineering at UCL. He attributed his good results to “putting his head down” to study and to the hard work of his “amazing” teachers Sanja, Sinead and Karen. Fela Maslen was waiting to hear from Cambridge University, after he secured A*s in maths and further maths and an A in biology. He already has an offer from Bristol. F e l a , who was home-educated for most of his school life, said the transition into full-time education at Tower Hamlets Fela Maslen got 100 per cent in maths. Pictured top is Ksistov Stachovski who gained a distinction in BTEC Level 3 provided a friendly, supportive environment which also allows students to work independently. Mr McDonald said Fela’s results, which include 100 per cent in maths, were some of the best he had seen during his five years at the college. Blackwall resident Neelima Malik, 18, (pictured) achieved an A* in sociology and B grades in English language and literature and psychology, securing her a place at University College London to study linguistics. She plans to become a speech therapist or teacher. Toslima Begum took the BTEC Level 3 route to secure a place at Goldsmiths University to study education, society and culture. The teenager from Bow gained triple distinctions. Two students at Raine’s Foundation School, Joel Adams and Lana Crowe, have places at Cambridge University while Iftikhar Latif from Cambridge Heath Sixth Form is heading to Oxford. Hundreds of teenagers learned of their A Level results last Thursday, August 14. Johura Hasna achieved As in government and politics, religious studies and English and will be starting an internship at professional services firm KPMG before going to Queeen Mary University to study law in September 2015. Brandon Ryan-Rahmani, from Bow, achieved two A*s in accounting and business studies and an A in economics. He is looking forward to starting an internship with Ernst and Young, an international professional services company based at Canary Wharf. Katie Hogg, from the Isle of Dogs, achieved an A* in sociology and an A in English language and literature. She is now going to Royal Holloway University to study psychology.
