Communities on the river “Places such as the the Limehouse Cut, Limehouse Basin, Regent’s Canal and Shadwell Basin are special. The housing advice team of the Housing Options Service is hosting the landlords’ forum on Wednesday, November 26 from 1pm to 4.30pm at Mile End Ecology Pavilion Centre. A Home Office speaker will talk about the Immigration Act 2014 and the requirement for landlords and letting agents to carry out immigration checks. A speaker from the Department of Communities and Local Government will talk about the requirement for all letting agents and property managers to be part of Government Approved redress scheme. A representative from the Mayor of London’s office will talk about the London Rental Standard and a representative from the National Landlord Association will respond to the update. Colin Cormack, head of the council’s Housing Options service, will chair the event. Agent signs up for new deal A POPLAR letting agent is the latest to sign up to a scheme which commits agents to provide a professional service to tenants and landlords. Lettings agent Your Move James Muir joined the Mayor of London’s Rental Standard scheme, launched earlier this year to bring a benchmark standard to the private rented sector across the capital. To join the scheme, letting agencies have to comply with the criteria set out by the programme, which includes transparency of fees, better communication with landlords and tenants, improved response times for repairs and maintenance, and protected deposits. Getting down and real dirty VOLUNTEER group the Lower Regents Coalition cleared rubbish from a drained section of the Regent’s Canal near Limehouse. The 900 metre long (two acre) section of the canal was drained to allow repairs to the bank. It is believed to be the first time the section of the canal has been drained in more than 100 years. Twenty volunteers spent a day removing rubbish, including cans, plastic bottles and plastic bags, while others wrestled with tyres, mattresses, a kitchen sink, traffic cones, bikes and shopping trolleys from the canal bed. Coalition member John White said more events are being arranged over the next few weeks on both weekdays and weekends. The coalition began as a small group of individuals and always welcomes new members. If you would like to volunteer, email lowerregentscoalition @gmail.com with your shoe size (for wellington boots!). All equipment is provided but participants are advised to take spare clothes. Circle Housing Old Ford is handing out SmartWater marking kits to residents in E3 postcodes. The high-tech security kit consists of a traceable liquid that contains a unique forensic code which can be applied to almost any valuable item. Once dry the liquid is almost impossible to remove and can only be seen under ultraviolet (UV) light. If marked valuables are stolen and later recovered, they can be returned quickly to the owner. SmartWater also acts as a deterrent to would-be burglars, as it can directly link them to a crime scene if they are caught in possession of marked property. Andrew Nowakowski, Circle Housing Old Ford’s anti-social behaviour manager, said: “We are committed to ensuring that all our residents have a safe place to live and providing these kits will help us to do that. “Any simple steps that can be taken to give our residents the extra reassurance that their valuables will be safe have got to be a good thing. It only takes a few minutes to dab the items throughout your house but it can save a huge amount of distress and hassle if you do become a victim of burglary.” Circle Housing Old Ford’s neighbourhoods team are using police intelligence to target residential burglary hotspots and will be hand delivering the kits to homes on Thursday, November 20. Time to light up Poplar THE festive season will arrive in Poplar this month when social housing landlord Poplar Harca launches a series of family events for Christmas. The main event will be the annual Christmas lights switch-on on Friday, November 28, in East India Square outside the Idea Store at 4.30pm.
