The ceremony featured the ringing of the HMS Crane ship bell by Major Murray Smith and Des Nicholson of the HMS Crane Association. The bell, located in the town hall foyer, was presented to the borough in memory of all those who served on the frigate adopted by the people of Bethnal Green during World War II. Commander John Ludgate relayed the history of the borough’s involvement in conflicts, including members of Tower Hamlets Rifles who fought in Flanders and at the capture of Jerusalem during World War I; and in World War 11, fighting in The Desert Rats, at Tobruck, at the capture of Tunis. “Today we remember British and Commonwealth military and civilian, men and women killed and injured in both world wars and later conflicts and in particular the seafarers at the Merchant Navy Memorial at Tower Hill; King George V’s Own Bengal Sappers & Miners; Bengal Civil Pioneer Corps; 49th Bengalis Bengal North Western Railway, units of which fought at Alamein, Chittagong, Tobruck, Tripoli, Cassino and Berlin among other locations,” the deputy lieutenant said. Mayor Lutfur Rahman, Speaker Cllr Abdul Chunu Mukit MBE and Cllr Peter Golds laid wreaths. The mayor and speaker were presented with a copy of the book Stepping Forward, which documents the record of the Volunteer Reserve Forces from 1908 to the present day, and Reserve links with the borough, historical listings of Reserve Forces Centres and the locations of memorials to the fallen. Along with the presentations to the mayor and speaker, Colonel Hugh Purcell OBE DL, chief executive of the Greater London Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association, handed over copies of the publication for each of the borough’s libraries.
