Votes count Make sure your vote counts on May 7 and register by April 20. 7364 0872 News News in brief Bar owner fined AN illegal shisha bar in Bow has been fined more than £3,000 for allowing the smoking of shisha indoors. La Fa Yaa Shisha Lounge in Roach Road was prosecuted by the council’s smoke free team at a hearing at Thames Magistrates’ Court on March 19. Leaseholder Shiplu Miah was found guilty of having failed to stop the illegal smoking of shisha in an enclosed place, an offence under the Health Act 2006. He was fined £800 and ordered to pay costs of £2,548 and an £80 victim surcharge. The council works with the Met Police and other agencies to ensure shisha bars are compliant with smoke-free legislation. Curators of the Geffrye Museum’s special exhibition, Homes of the Homeless: Seeking Shelter in Victorian London, will lead the tour on Saturday, April 25. The walk kicks off at 2pm at Whitechapel station and lasts an hour and a half. Tickets, at £16/£13, include free entry to the exhibition. They were alerted about a suspicious vehicle in Sage Street, E1 by Tower Hamlets Homes and, with the help of their K9 dog unit, they were directed to the car wheel. Author to visit literary festival AUTHOR Ben Aaronovitch will be appearing at Idea Store Canary Wharf as part of literary festival Cityread London this Thursday, April 16. Cityread London is an annual celebration of literature and each April, Cityread asks residents, workers and visitors to pick up the same book and read it together. Taking the novel as a starting point, a month-long programme of book groups, film screenings and other events takes place across London. Aaronovitch’s urban fantasy novel Rivers of London follows the adventures of a rookie copper turned-apprentice-wizard, Peter Grant, and his boss, the last wizard in England. The event at Idea Store Canary Wharf starts at 1pm. The Great Cloth Nappy Change challenge will take place on Saturday, April 18 at the Museum of London Garden Room, in London Wall, EC2. Young Mayor Deng Yan San and one of her deputies Monsur Ali on a recent visit to the House of Commons Borough’s Young Mayor set to make a difference BY RAJU MIAH THE new Young Mayor’s team have been travelling around the borough to find out how they can improve the lives of young people living, studying or working in the borough. Young Mayor Deng Yan San and her two deputies, Shofiqul Alom and Monsur Ali, were elected to represent the voice of young people for the next two years when a record number of youngsters took part in the elections in January. The feedback from these meetings has already helped craft two events, A Borough of Opportunities, delivered by the Young Mayor’s team with the support of the council. Eleven people are vying to represent the Bethnal Green & Bow constituency with seven people hoping to be elected in Poplar & Limehouse in the General Election on May 7. The 18 names were announced last Thursday, April 9 by the council’s acting returning officer, John Williams, who also reminded residents that they have only one more week to register to vote in next month’s election. The deadline for electors to register is Monday, April 20.
