Boroughs team up to tackle fly-tipping gangs THE council and other east London local authorities are clamping down on a huge surge in fly-tipping. Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham and Redbridge are suffering a large and sudden increase in both fly-tipping and dumping of waste. The upsurge is believed to be down to a single gang using two or three vehicles across the four boroughs. A local intelligence network has now been established between the councils to tackle the suspected gang, with support from officers from the Environment Agency. Recently, Tower Hamlets’ Clean and Green team spotted a suspect vehicle in Wick Lane, Bow after being provided with information from officers in Redbridge. The vehicle was stopped by the police and subsequently seized by Redbridge Council. The network is calling on all residents to report any sightings of fly-tipping or waste dumping. Residents or businesses which leave waste outside their property on the wrong days or without having made prior lawful arrangements for collection risk fines or prosecution. Fly-tipping vehicles are typically more than five years old, poorly maintained and normally in use overnight. They are likely to be uninsured, unregistered, untaxed and used by a number of drivers. Fly-tippers will sometimes ‘disguise’ themselves by wearing high-visibility clothing but normally operate without uniforms and associate with criminals linked to burglary, theft and drug offences. Tower Hamlets welcomes information about fly-tipping –visit www.towerhamlets.gov. uk/default.aspx?page=13234 email LBTHwasteenforcement @towerhamlets.gov.uk or call 7364 6067/6507. Any information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence. Witnesses are advised not to approach fly-tippers but to make a note of vehicle registration numbers, the time, date and any descriptions of the individuals involved. If you think the police can catch the tippers at the scene or nearby, call 999 to report the matter immediately. Incidents on housing estates should be reported to the relevant landlord who should arrange for clearance. Businesses that want to arrange waste collections can call Veolia on 7510 0010.
