The Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave St Paul’s Way Medical Centre the highest rating, following an inspection in November last year. The practice, which provides GP and primary care services to about 10,500 patients, was measured outstanding in six areas of its work including services for older people and for people experiencing poor mental health. The report also highlights a number of examples of exceptional practice, such as the community drug therapies team, benefits advice sessions for patients and health promotion activities. Professor Steve Field, CQC’s chief inspector of general practice, said: “Throughout the inspection we were particularly impressed by the many ways in which the practice engaged with patients and involved them in the life of the practice. “I have no doubt that everyone should share the credit for this outstanding service.” St Paul’s Way is run by a team of eight GPs who took over the medical centre in 2011. Clinical lead Dr Joe Hall told East End Life that the practice Dr Joe Hall (centre) and the St Paul’s Way Medical Centre team – “everyone has contributed a huge amount” to its success was a real community partnership: “We are very proud that CQC has recognised our achievements,” he said. “We have established a great new team and everyone has contributed a huge amount in turning around the practice. “St Paul’s Way Medical Centre is a local not-for-profit organisation and we have shown what can be achieved by working with the community and patients to achieve excellent clinical results.” He added: “We have been helped and inspired by our patients and community partners including the St Paul’s Way Trust School, St Paul’s Way Transformation Project, Prince’s Trust, Bromley by Bow Centre, Poplar Harca and the local pharmacy.” The inspection was part of a new programme by the CQC to assess all of England’s GP practices according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led.
