Sport in brief Rugby MILLWALL Rugby Club’s second team sponsors have agreed to continue backing the club. Carrot Cars, a minicab company based at Admirals Way, Isle of Dogs, will fund the team for the second season. This will enable the club to continue to develop, and offer facilities for training, playing and supporting rugby – particularly important in this World Cup year. Millwall are recruiting players for the new year fitness drive. Experienced players and beginners are welcome at their Monday or Wednesday night training sessions (7 for 7.30pm). Beginners and lapsed players can join the Return to Rugby course running on Saturday mornings. Sailing THE London Boat Show running at Docklands Excel Centre from now until January 18 will, as usual, boast some impressive yachts and boats for all types of ages and pockets. But if you just happen to have £1.89million to spare, a luxury Princess S72 powerboat, www.gll.org one of this year’s new exhibits, could be all yours for a life on the ocean wave. The show is now in its 61st year and younger visitors can enjoy canoeing and kayaking lessons to get adjusted to life in the water or improve their skills. Athletics TOWER Hamlets is to share in a £4.8million pot from the London Marathon Charitable Trust. The borough is to receive £65,780 – one of 70 organisations in London, Surrey and Northants who will benefit from the fund. And 12-year-old Ross’s prize at the Hurley event on the Thames was a brand new boat. Ross, twice the Tower Hamlets kayak performer of the year, is one of the few paddlers to compete nationally in two disciplines – slalom and freestyle. The highlights of the season for Ross included a gold medal Ross Dixon in the British Club Championships in the autumn, for top overall performance. Coach and European finalist Dan McGaley said: “Ross was brilliant that day, he was really focussed and deserved the result. He has trained hard over the summer and it all paid off. “Some of the guys he beat have been paddling for 20 years. He was also a great part of the team event, his enthusiasm was really infectious.” Ross is part of the England Talent Academy training six times a week at the Lee Valley Olympic White Water Centre, alongside British world and Olympic champions. He has set his sights on the European championships when he is old enough in 2017.
