EDF Energy signed the agreement with THH as part of the government’s Energy Company Obligation – an initiative to help people in low-income areas to save energy and money. Five hundred homes in four neighbourhoods, including Bancroft, Avebury, St Stephen’s and Chicksand, will benefit from the scheme. Ann Lucas, chair of the THH board, said: “At a time when there are pressures on household incomes it is great that we are able to work with EDF Energy to help cash-strapped residents make ends meet. “ Birth of a new community BY SAM GOUGH PLANS by Canary Wharf Group to regenerate the 4.9 million square foot area formerly known as Wood Wharf have been given the go-ahead by the council. The development of the Isle of Dogs site just east of Canary Wharf will include: 3,610 residential units, 25 per cent of which will be affordable housing; four new public spaces, ensuring residents have access to space for leisure; a new road network that will connect Wood Wharf to Canary Wharf in the west and to Prestons Road in the east; a proposed new primary school for 420 children from the Wood Wharf site and the wider Isle of Dogs area; new health facilities and an Idea Store; commercial uses, including a hotel, retail spaces and 1.9 million square feet of offices. Sir George Iacobescu, chief executive of Canary Wharf Group, said the scheme would reinforce Canary Wharf’s status as one of the most attractive new places to both live and work. “It gives us the go-ahead to create a brand new London community, attracting both residents and companies from the fast growing technology, media and telecoms sector as we continue to diversify,” he said. The redevelopment will make a huge contribution to the An artist’s impression of the Wood Wharf scheme council’s housing and employment needs. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “We are working incredibly hard to build affordable homes for our residents. Wood Wharf will become yet another flagship regeneration project, and will make Tower Hamlets an incredible place to live, work and visit.” Over the last five years, more than 4,500 new affordable homes have been built in Tower Hamlets, the largest number in the country. Cllr Rabina Khan, cabinet member for housing and development, said: “We are proud of our work around housing. Wood Wharf will be another example of the way that Tower Hamlets is leading the rest in building and regenerating.” Christmas tree collection There will be a collection service for the recycling of real Christmas trees from 5th - 23rd January. If you currently receive a kerbside food and garden waste collection, simply remove any decorations and pots from your tree and leave out for collection on your scheduled collection day.
