The 888,246 ceramic poppies which make up the display have already been sold to raise money for charity. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have seen the artwork, which marks 100 years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in World War I. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. The installation has caught the public imagination, with roads and Tower Hill Tube station being closed at times to manage the crowds. Residents who intend to catch the display before it ends are being advised by Historic Royal Palaces to visit the Tower at night or outside peak hours.
