The impact of these changes could be serious and some households may no longer be able to afford their current housing costs. This year, the council has employed 14 graduate social workers. The borough is also part of a pilot programme aimed at helping to develop social workers. Keri O’Riordan completed her final placement at Tower Hamlets and returned to work here as a social worker. She said: “I was keen to return due to the borough’s commitment to learning and professional development. “Tower Hamlets has developed a comprehensive programme for newly qualified social workers. “I have been impressed by other social workers who have gone out of their way to support my development by allowing me to shadow home visits and professional meetings. “I feel confident in my decision to begin my social work career in Tower Hamlets.” Rachel James, a student social worker, said: “We have all felt really welcomed by our teams and the wider family support and protection service. “Although we’re aware that the learning has just started and there is a huge amount for us to do, we feel that we couldn’t be in a better place to do this.” Mayor Lutfur Rahman praised council staff for their hard work in making the borough an attractive place to begin a social work career. “Recruiting the brightest talent in the social work field is something that we are very good at here in Tower Hamlets,” he said. The Mayor’s praise comes on the back of recent media coverage about Frontline – a graduate programme for budding social workers, in a similar vein to the popular Teach First programme. Conservation consultation THE council is inviting residents to have their say on the impact of planning restrictions in conservation areas. A public hearing has been organised to discuss the implications of planning restrictions on residents who want to extend their family homes in conservation areas. A group of councillors is assessing whether these controls, which are in place to protect conservation areas, can detrimentally impact on the local community, for example when properties can’t be extended and growing families are forced to then relocate. Tredegar Square, in Bow, is a conservation area At the meeting, councillors would like to consult with residents who own family houses in one of the 58 conservation areas in the borough. The session aims to consider what changes to planning policy and regulations may be desirable to meet the needs of residents, while protecting the borough’s heritage. The consultation session will take place at 7pm on Monday, November 17 at St Paul’s Church, St Stephen’s Road, E3. All residents are welcome to attend but you must book a place in advance. Email vicky.allen@tower hamlets.gov.uk or call 7364 4320 to book. Findings will be presented at the council’s overview and scrutiny meeting in the New Year.
