Photos by Rehan Jamil Successful students with Mayor Lutfur Rahman after being presented with their certificates CONSCIENTIOUS pupils who spent their free time learning a community language and sitting an extra GCSE or A level were invited to meet Mayor Lutfur Rahman on October 31 and receive their exam board certificate. The council’s Community Languages Service supports children’s learning of mother tongues and celebrates their heritage through after-school clubs. This summer, 90 students aged 11-15 sat either an early GCSE or A level in Bengali, Arabic, Cantonese and Mandarin, achieving excellent results with 95 per cent getting A* to C grades. The highest performers were joined by parents and teachers at the event held at Idea Store Whitechapel. Kenny Ha studied Cantonese GCSE and gained an A* with a perfect score of 100 per cent. Kenny said: “Thank you to my teacher, Stella Chung, for helping Kenny Ha Bushratul Jannah me to achieve 100 per cent in my exams. It was tough but I went home and practiced over and over again.” Bushratul Jannah received a special award for her impressive A* in Bengali A level. Bushra completed her AS and A level in one year and was given the award for an exceptional result. Last year Bushra achieved an A* in GCSE Bengali. She said: “I would like to thank my teacher and my family for supporting me and I would strongly advise all the students that are doing GCSE to continue and achieve A levels. It is worth it as it could help you to get into a renowned university.” Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Congratulations to all of the students and staff for another excellent set of results. Achieving high grades like these in GCSE and A level exams will enable our children to get places at top universities in the UK. “Learning a community language is important as it not only helps children understand their heritage, it provides a foundation for further learning.” Cllr Gulam Robbani, cabinet member for education and children’s services, added: “Tower Hamlets is lucky to have such a diverse mix of languages spoken and adds to the richness of our borough. “These good results are down to the hard work of the children, their teachers and community leaders and parents, who encourage them to study outside school hours.” More than 70 after-school classes currently take place in the borough catering for over 2,000 children every week in a range of languages including Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Italian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Somali, Spanish and Urdu.
