The return of the Mac Artist’s work on show in his own backyard for LGBT History Month BY SHALINA HUSSAIN A NEW exhibition of works by British painter Cornelius McCarthy opens this week to mark national Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month. The artist was born and brought up in Stepney, educated at local Catholic schools and trained at Toynbee Hall and Whitechapel Upper Gallery before attending Goldsmiths College of Art. Entitled Radiant Affinities, the exhibition is hosted by the council and opens at Tower Young Docker – Edward, 2008 (c) Alec Ayres The Great Facade, 2008 High achievers honoured THE achievements of the British Bangladeshi community were celebrated at an event attended by guest of honour Foreign Secretary William Hague. The British Bangladeshi Power & Inspiration 2015 celebrated the success of 100 people, with many Tower Hamlets names among those listed. They included businessman Mamun Chowdhury, founder of coat manufacturer London Tradition, kickboxer and Muay Thai champion Ruqsana Begum, Mohammed Shahidul Alam, vice-chair of Tower Hamlets Cricket Club, and Islah Abdur-Rahman, who directs Hamlets Local History Library & Archives in Bancroft Road, Mile End on Thursday, February 12. McCarthy’s work can be found in private collections worldwide. The waterfront and townscape of the East End provided his earliest inspiration, and memories of Stepney remained with him throughout his career. Later work reflected the period of unprecedented social, cultural and political change through which he lived, from post-war London to the sexual politics and ideological struggles of the 21st century. The exhibition will feature the media in which he excelled: oil on canvas, pencil drawings, gouache and etchings, as well as a number of the artist’s sketchbooks which were recently donated to the collections of the Local History & Archives. The exhibition runs from Thursday until May 7 and is curated by Peter Dobson, author of Radiant Affinities, the first full-length biography William Hague with Judge Khatun Sapnara and BBPI founders Ayesha Qureshi and Abdal Ullah and stars in the YouTube comedy sketch Corner Shop. Mayor Lutfur Rahman and Bethnal Green & Bow MP Rushanara Ali are also on the list. Mr Hague said: “British Bangladeshis are very much of McCarthy which will be published in April.
