This year’s theme was Keeping the Memory Alive and the event featured music, a short film showing the story of Holocaust survivor Esther Brunstein, poetry, readings and reflections from a number of speakers and guests from different faiths and communities. Deputy Mayor Cllr Oliur Rahman, who attended, said: “We must remember that when we let our hearts harden to the injustice of others, when we turn a blind eye and look the other way in the face of injustice, we create conditions under which oppression grows and hatred spreads. “That is what happened to our Jewish brethren and we must not let that happen again to them or any other community.” Mayor Lutfur Rahman attended a service at City Hall to pay his respects to survivors of the Holocaust and highlight the fight against injustice. National Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every January 27, marking the liberation of Auschwitz- Birkenau in 1945. Check for grubby grub COUPLES going for a romantic Valentine’s meal can first check whether their chosen restaurant is clean enough to eat your dinner off. Environmental health officers are urging couples to look before they book and check hygiene ratings before deciding where to go. More than 400 out of the 529 restaurants in Tower Hamlets hold the top ‘very good’ rating for hygiene. Council food safety officers ensure restaurants are rated from 0 to 5 for hygiene with the results published on the Food Standards Agency website. Cllr Shahed Ali, cabinet member for clean and green, said: “When planning your meal out, make sure you check the hygiene ratings online and choose a restaurant that takes it seriously.” Visit www.food.gov.uk/ratings or look for the green and black sticker in the window of your chosen restaurant. Parking services survey THE council’s parking and mobility services are to be routinely and more frequently surveyed. Residents without cars, parking permit holders, visitors and Blue Badge holders will be sent customer satisfaction questionnaires through the post. Priorities to be considered include tackling Blue Badge fraud, increasing and managing parking bays/spaces, and removing abandoned vehicles. The service also wants to tackle bus lane misuse and illegal parking. Interfaith service held at the East London Central Synagogue BY SHALINA HUSSAIN RESIDENTS paid their respects to the victims of the Holocaust at an interfaith service in Whitechapel. The commemoration service took place at the East London Central Synagogue in Nelson Street on Sunday, February 1 to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day. Tower Hamlets had the honour of being chosen to receive one of 70 Auschwitz Memory Candles designed by Sir Anish Kapoor, which have been distributed around the country.
