Weightlifter Mercy Brown (above), a British record holder, and sprinter Bianca Williams, a University of East London student, have both been listed. The awards, which recognise the contribution of volunteers and participants at grassroots level as well as inducting former London Youth Games competitors into the Hall of Fame, will be held this Thursday, September 11 at Madame Tussauds. Brown, from Stepney, competed in the under 75kg class at the London Youth Games and went on to finish fourth in the Commonwealth Games, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal. She is tipped as one of our top Olympic medal hopes in Rio 2016 and will be aiming for a European junior crown first in Sweden next year. Williams won bronze medals in the 200m and 4x100m relay at the Commonwealth Games. Stratford’s Copperbox Arena, which hosted the London Youth Games handball finals, sports hall qualifiers and schools badminton qualifiers when the Games took place in the Olympic Park for the first time, is also up for an award. Mitchell title tilt KEVIN Mitchell could raise the curtain on a new professional boxing season with the title fight he always wanted. Promoter Eddie Hearn has lined him up to fight a selected opponent at the O2 arena, and there is an outside chance it could be a dream title shot. IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez has signed up with Al Haymon and they are keen for a defence against twicebeaten Mitchell. The news was revealed by promoter Sean Gibbons. Vazquez – 34 fights, three defeats and 13 knockouts – is ranked number one by The Ring magazine. Gibbons said: “We’re looking into some fights and Vasquez has a mandatory defence due on September 21. We’re getting ready to offer him a fight in England against Kevin.” A winner of 13 consecutive fights, three by knockout, Vazquez, 27, has not suffered defeat since losing to current junior middleweight Canelo Alvarez in July 2007 and two-division title winner Tim Bradley in June 2008. The 29-year-old Mitchell – 38 fights, two losses and 28 knockouts – has won five consecutive fights, including the last four by stoppage, and was in action for last month’s 11th-round knockout of Ghislain Maduma. He was knocked out in three rounds by Michael Katsidis in May 2010 and in four rounds by Ricky Burns in September 2012. SUNDAY boxing returns to York Hall on September 14 when Miranda Carter lifts the curtain on the new season with her Burning Ambition show. Twelve contests are scheduled for the venue featuring Johnny Coyle, Alan Higgins, Kreshnik Qato, Ricky Leach, Mark Douglas, Bert Saggs and Zeki Hussain. This week, from Wednesday to Sunday, September 10-14 – appropriately at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – will host the Invictus Games, Prince Harry’s pet project. More than 400 competitors from 14 nations will take part in the games, for wounded and sick servicemen and women. Teams will come from the armed forces of nations that have served alongside each other and the games aim to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding of those who serve their country. Mickaela Richards, Dave Henson, Danni Hampson-Carroll and Susan Cook getting ready for the games The sound of the starting gun will kick off Day 1 at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre at Picketts Lock, Edmonton with a range of track and field disciplines, all culminating in the 4x100m relays. This will be followed by wheelchair baske t b a l l , wheelchair rugby, sitting volleyball, archery, powerlifting, swimming, indoor rowing and road cycling, all taking place at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, the Copper Box Arena and the London Aquatics Centre. Teams will come from across the globe – Afghanistan, Australia, France, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Great Britain and America. When he launched the games, Prince Harry said: “These men and women have achieved so much already, but being selected for this team is another significant milestone in their life beyond injury. “The games are not just for those taking part, but for the ‘wider family’ and the teams would not just be competing for themselves but for their mates. “No-one recovering from a life-changing injury could do it alone and everyone will testify to that. “The support of friends and family is vital and the games recognise this contribution.” RESIDENTS are invited to sign up for free group exercise classes in six of the borough’s parks. The Our Parks scheme will be running until October 20 and classes include box fit, circuits, Pilates, yoga and dance fit. Hour-long sessions led by qualified instructors, including Delroy Salmon (above), can be booked at three different levels of intensity in Mile End, Victoria Park, Millwall, Stepney Green and King Edward Memorial parks, and Bethnal Green Gardens. All classes are funded by the council. You must be aged 16 or over to attend a class alone. Children over the age of three can attend sessions when accompanied or with permission from a parent or guardian.
