The manager said the restaurant was a down-to-earth BY IAN READ YOUNG people can now apply for £400 each as this year’s Mayor’s Education Award (MEA) gets underway. Now in its fourth year, the award helps students from poorer backgrounds stay in education after their GCSEs. Successful applicants will receive the cash to help towards the costs of studying. The council expects to fund all eligible students so is encouraging as many young people as possible to apply. Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Poverty is no barrier to success. The success of our schools and of our students proves this time and time again. “Many young people would drop out of education if it wasn’t for the MEA, which could affect their life chances. I refuse to let anyone fail to reach their potential because of a lack of finances.” The MEA was launched in 2011 to replace the support that had previously been provided through the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), which was scrapped by government. Cllr Gulam Robbani, cabinet member for education and children’s services, said: “We are proud to help our young people in this way and I urge anyone who thinks they may be eligible to visit the website or give us a ring.” The MEA has become so successful that it inspired a sister scheme aimed at helping local students studying at university. The Mayor’s Higher Education Award will open for a second year later this month. The application period for the original scheme, the MEA, is now formally open. Any applications already submitted will be accepted. The money, which is dependent on the applicant attending all their lessons, will be paid in two instalments of £200 and because it is a grant, there is no need for any of it to be paid back. There are various criteria which applicants must fulfill, including being aged between 16 and 19 on September 1, having lived in Tower Hamlets for at least three years and a household income of less than £20,817. Students are advised to get their applications in as soon as Points of Light award for outstanding Poplar volunteer PRIME Minister David Cameron has named a Poplar resident as one of the country’s outstanding volunteers by awarding her a Points of Light prize. Nominated for the award by social enterprise Dot Dot Dot, Jenny is a volunteer caseworker for the International Family Tracing service at the British Red Cross, a listening volunteer with the Samaritans and a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s (RNLI) volunteer crew. Jenny said: “I have gained a huge amount both personally and professionally from volunteering, it isn’t just a big part of my weekly routine but also my identity.” Dot Dot Dot, which is based in the borough, allows people who do volunteering to live cheaply in buildings that would otherwise be empty. 8 – 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 N E W S F R O M T O WER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 3
