AN event which gives a twist to the traditional tea dance is taking place on Wednesday, September 10 at Spitalfields Market. Visitors will be able to watch professionals from the Swing Patrol dance company, as well as take part in dance competitions and beginners’ taster lessons, all accompanied by music from the 1930s and 40s. The event, from 12.30-2.30pm, kick-starts cancer charity Macmillan’s Biggest Coffee Morningon September 26, which last year raised a £20 million. All funds raised will be used by Macmillan to fund vital services for people affected by cancer, from specialist nurses to grants for patients to help ease financial worries. Compass Wellbeing CIC will host the event at Idea Store Whitechapel, 321 Whitechapel Road, E1 from 11am-3pm. There will be information stalls, as well as free activities for all ages including face painting, smoothie making and a henna artist. Light refreshments will be provided. Call 7791 3660 or email jusna.uddin@nhs.net Pick up your paddle COMMUNITY charity the Bromley by Bow Centre is calling on companies in Tower Hamlets to battle it out in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park inaugural dragon boat tournament on September 11. Teams will paddle authentic dragon boats, with a drummer positioned at the bow, to raise funds for the centre’s work with some of the most disadvantaged families in east London. Entry to the tournament costs £1,000 per team of 11-15 rowers plus a £100 sponsorship target per crew member. The Way of Wellness is a practical course, which encourages people to describe their experiences, rather than judging or evaluating them. Healthy food and herbal tea will be served. Pilvi won the 2013 Emdash Award for emerging artists outside the UK and she let the children decide how to spend part of the award on a new art project. A committee of boys and girls between the ages of eight and 12 put together a budget and, following a series of summer workshops,made a public announcement of their decision to create a ‘five-star bouncy house’. On Saturday, August 23 the youngsters saw the outcome of their hard work (above).
