And for the last five years UK Disability History Month, from mid-November to mid-December, promotes the important contribution disabled people have made within our society. The objectives are to celebrate the positives of disability and promote wider understanding. This year, a significant focus is on the impact wounded veterans have had on the struggle for disability rights. Lots of people have become disabled – both servicemen and civilians – as a result of war. The amazing poppies at the Tower of London inspired tens of thousands of visitors to think differently about the people who died in World War I a hundred years ago. But what about the changes that came about in our society because of all of the newly disabled people as a result of war? It was many of those people that first fought for rights for disabled people: for decent jobs, decent incomes and equality in society. At Real, we are still supporting people to get those same rights and opportunities. For the whole of disability month, there are arts events, talks and other social activities across the East End covering a range of disability issues. You can find out more by visiting www.together2012.org.uk Having the choice REAL’S tagline is “disabled people working together for real choices”. For us, these include the choices over how we get and receive care and support. Real is supporting our local Clinical Commisioning Group to promote personal health budgets (PHBs) in Tower Hamlets. A PHB is about having control over how you receive certain parts of your health care. At the moment, they are limited to people who receive Continuing Healthcare, which is a relatively small number of people. But from April 2015 more people will become eligible for them. Our role is to deliver presentations to local voluntary organisations, producing an information sheet on PHBs and helping to distribute information packs. If you want more details you can contact our Independent Living Support advice line on 7001 2188. It is open Monday to Friday between 10.30am and 3.30pm. It’s in English every day, and also in Somali on Wednesdays and Bengali on Mondays and Thursdays. Free training WE are continuing to offer training for anyone working as a personal assistant (PA) and their disabled employers. This training will run between December and February 2015. In December, Real will hold two tailored sessions for PAs and employers who speak Somali and Bengali on ‘Getting the best out of your role as an employer’ and a session in December and January on ‘Developing my skills as a PA’. Other sessions running next year include food nutrition, manual handling, keeping safe, and employment law – knowing your responsibilities. They will also cover dementia and autism awareness. All sessions come with certificates and some expenses can be covered. For more information on these sessions call Jackie at Real on 7001 2182 or email jacqueline.jones@real.org.uk Contacting Real IN addition to contacting the specific numbers above, you can: call Real Answers on 7001 2177 for general queries like and talk to us on Facebook www.facebook.com/RealDPO follow us on Twitter: @RealD PO or visit www.real.org.uk Fighting on the home front Many people injured during wars were among those who first fought for rights for disabled people: for decent jobs, decent incomes and equality in society.
