Pupils from five primary schools – Bygrove, St Saviour’s, Lansbury Lawrence, Mayflower and Marner – performed carols on stage. Characters from Disney’s Frozen wowed the crowd and led a sing-a-long before The X Factor finalist Misha B joined Poplar and Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick to switch on the lights. The event, held in East India Square on Friday, November 28, marked the launch of a series of Christmas activities taking place at the market, hosted by social housing organisation Poplar Harca. This Saturday, December 13, the Chrispmas community fete will take place from 11am-4pm. It was announced at cabinet on December 3 that the nurseries would be removed from savings proposals to be put before full council in January. The council has been consulting with the public on savings proposals as it tries to make up for £100m in government cuts. One proposal was to close Queen Mary, Overland, Mary Sambrook and John Smith Day nurseries. Alternative provision would have been available at other nurseries in the borough. Parents enthusiastically supported the nurseries. And at November’s cabinet, the mayor asked council officers to look again at the proposed closures.
