Alongside Professor Janet Harbord, Dr Amit S Rai and Dr Gil Toffell from Queen Mary Univeristy of London, the group had a busy week leading up to the main event at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences where Nurull and Assan delivered a presentation on the project’s work. Nurull said: “It was a great opportunity to showcase the work we do and our young people’s talent in Mumbai.” The project is a partnership with Queen Mary University of London and the TATA Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Teenagers take party controls PARENTS were barred from T h e Roya l L o n d o n Children’s Hospital healing space as the children’s team threw its first ever teenagers-only party. Approximately 60 patients, aged 12-19, took over the seventh floor and enjoyed an afternoon of activities all to themselves, with hospital staff on hand if needed. Activities on offer included graffiti T-shirt workshops, making mocktails, taking photos in a fancy-dress photo booth, getting spray tattoos as well as an eight-lane Scalextric track and a nail bar. A live DJ, cartoonist and illusionist also provided entertainment. Patients also had the opportunity to try their hand at learning how to spin tunes with a DJ. Charity Rays of Sunshine donated £3,000 to pay for the event and some entertainment was provided free of charge. The hospital cares for young people with a range of serious and long-term conditions including cancer, cystic fibrosis and diabetes. These conditions see them regularly attend the hospital, either as an inpatient or for follow-up appointments. Tara Shea, play team leader, said: “Our young patients know how to throw an awesome party! “We are proud of the support we offer to the many young people who we see coping very well with serious illness, and children with long-term conditions who grow up into high-achieving young adults. We often form strong bonds with them and their families; it was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves.” Charlie Thompson, 14, and Jordan Gasper, 13, enjoy the activities A MILE End-based group specialising in participatory film projects was in Mumbai last week showcasing its award-winning work.
