Year 3 pupils from Harry Gosling Primary School in Whitechapel produced their own tales of chivalry, bravery and magic from medieval times using pictures and pattern instead of words. And youngsters from William Davis Primary School in Bethnal Green chose a different direction and looked at the Victorian age when London and Britain were in the throes of great change. The year 5 group used painted, wooden-relief panels, printed and collaged banners and exploratory Nasir and Valentin of William Davis School drawings for their work. Since May, George Green’s Secondary School and St Paul’s Way Trust School have taken part in five days of activities, including creating an enterprising product or service for the park and presenting a business plan to a panel of local employers. The top teams from these and another five east London schools then went on to the final stages of the competition and gave a presentation in front of industry experts last month. George Green’s ‘Chubby Cobras’ team’s plan was to build a supermarket that would raise money to help under-developed countries. St Paul’s ‘Aspire’ team proposed the building of a health centre aimed at families. Their hard work paid off with members of both teams triumphing. Zonitsa Cholakova of George Green’s won an award for having the most competitive attitude, Sabbir Ahmed of George Green’s won an award for being the most committed student and Hussain Muneem of St Paul’s Way was rewarded for being Pupils from George Green’s School and, below, students from St Paul’s Way Trust School the most engaged during the project. Dennis Hone, chief executive of LLDC, said: “Following this successful project we will continue our work with schools to help raise aspirations and inspire extraordinary careers.” Pupils getting support for literacy skills CHILDREN at Christ Church Primary School are among 2,000 youngsters across London being supported to improve their literacy skills. A volunteer from children’s literacy charity Beanstalk works with three children at the Brick Lane school each week as part of the Inspiring Reading project, supported by the Mayor’s Fund for London. Last month Rushanara Ali, shadow education minister and MP for Bethnal Green & Bow, visited the school to meet the children supported by the project and volunteer Debbie Heatlie. Head teacher Julian Morant said: “Inspiring Reading volunteers make a positive impact at the school. As well as boosting their confidence, this also provides them with essential reading skills in order to access the curriculum fully.” Inspiring Reading is currently in seven schools in Tower Hamlets and needs more volunteers – call 7250 8275 or visit www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk. 10 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 6 – 12 JANUARY 2014
