The school, in Ben Jonson Road, Stepney, entered the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships at Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Centre – and thanks to Mohammed won their first ever gold medal in a national competition. And the 11-year-ol d ’s obvious prowess with the oars has alerted talent scouts from the the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, who now see Mohammed as very much one to watch for the future. Stepney Green sent 45 youngsters to the event and, although they had confidence in their Mohammed Mahatir crew, they never imagined their medal drought would end. Mohammed won the year 7 by rowing 569metres in two minutes. Team-mate Badrun Ali, 15, came 30th in the year 11 competition while Shahria Hussain, also 15, was 34th. To cap off a day to remember for the school, the boys’ relay team managed a creditable seventh-place finish. The championships attracted more than 2,000 entries from the best rowing schools and clubs in the country. Chris Kinnear, school sport coordinator who accompanied the team with head of PE, Martin Smith, could not believe what had happened. He said: “In 21 years at the school this really is the ‘standout’ achievement of this generation. “We have had many boys who have become London champions in athletics, cricket or badminton and many boys who have gone to national finals. “However, this is our first national champion. “This is made even more impressive when you consider that we only introduced rowing about seven years ago and were competing against schools from all over the country with a deep tradition in the event.” TO complete a superb week for Stepney Green College, they also represented Tower Hamlets at badminton in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games – and distinguished themselves by winning a bronze medal. They were competing with 2,500 other youngsters in Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and Tower Hamlets finished third in their mini-league. Each of the schools who competed in the finals had come through a tough qualifying competition in February and there was a high standard of badminton throughout. Team manager Giovanni Giordano said: “We’ve already exceeded what we expected to do so just to get to this round was a positive.” The medal-winners are pictured with former Great Britain athlete Jo Mersh.
