The 13-year-old from Limehouse was representing her country for the first time, after being selected following her recent performances and national training camp assessments. Competing against six other European countries and seven other divers aged 17, Scarlett was the youngest in the competition. But that didn’t stop her gaining fourth places on both the 1-metre and 3-metre springboards, missing out on a bronze medal by only a single point. This was even more impressive as it was the first time she has had to travel on her own without her coach, so had to take charge of her preparation, nutrition and general day-to-day organisation. Team GB won the event overall beating Germany and Italy, and Scarlett’s fourth places were an important part in achieving this. Soccer THE Inner London Football League staged its Unity Cup tournament with 16 teams contesting the Super Cup and eight teams in the mix for the over-35s Legends Cup. The match of the day saw the League Cup and Challenge Cup winners – Reachout and Leytonstone – going head to head. It ended 2-2 and in a cracking penalty shootout Leytonstone were victorious – only to fall 5- 1 in the quarter-finals against E7. The other semi-finalists are London Tigers who beat SCTA 5-4 in a penalty shootout, FC Bengals who defeated FC Hamlets 2-1 and Tower Hamlets, 6-2 winners over Ace. Tower Hamlets will now play FC Bengals for a place in the final, while reigning cup holders Tigers take on E7. In the Legends Cup, group A was won by London Tigers with FC Sylhet joining them in the next round. Group B was won by Birmingham Vets while runners-up were Stepney Legends FC. Hockey EAST London ladies 3rd team confirmed their hold on third place in Essex Division 2 with a 12-0 annihilation on the south Essex coast. Captain and player of the match Lexi Elven joined in the fun with the club’s goal of the season against Southend’s 2nds. East London men’s 2nd team lost out on the road by the odd goal in five against Saffron Walden 3rds Captain Dominic Tyler and Guy Perkins were on the scoresheet for East. East’s 6th team, meanwhile fared a little better in an eight goal thriller against Saffron Walden’s 7th team In a tense first half, the home team scored from a penalty stroke. After the break, recently promoted East came back with two goals from captain Ladi Oloyede and two from Alan Fitzpatrick. Saffron Walden responded with two field goals and another penalty, to share the points. Marland Yarde puts Olga Primary School children through their paces Rugby youngsters to get a chance to shine BY PETER FAULKNER THE future of English rugby could have its roots firmly planted in Tower Hamlets thanks to a new youth academy. It was launched at Olga Primary School in Bow on March 26 with the academy’s patron, England and Harlequins winger, Marland Yarde. The Clifford Chance Rugby Academy is currently running in ten primary schools across the borough and is working to develop links with Millwall and Blackheath rugby clubs for the most talented children. It will help with extra training in holiday camps and support with the supply of equipment and transport to and from sessions. Law firm Clifford Chance is working with Tower Hamlets Youth Sports Foundation on the academy with volunteers attending each school session to give hands-on support to rugby development officer Scott Vinnicombe. Yarde joined students for the launch and the England winger demonstrated his skills and inspired the children to work even harder in preparation for their tag rugby tournament during the summer. Pupils also joined students from other schools taking part in the academy in an afternoon game of tag rugby. Veras take Germany by storm Karate GLOBE-trotting Veras Karate Academy reached new heights last month by winning 15 medals and finishing top of the pile in a competition with 53 worldwide associations. The Poplar club’s latest success came in Hamburg in the Elbe Cup. And while the Germans finished top country on their home turf, the east Londoners ended the day as top club. They won eight gold medals, four silver and three bronze – to further vindicate sensei Raphael Veras’ philosophy of taking his charges abroad to test and develop their skills against top class oppositon. This event saw them up against teams from Norway, Denmark and Holland as well as the host country, but none of the team was fazed by the opposition. Sensei Veras said: “Although it was a long day, it was well worth it to see our association reaching the top and have other instructors recognising the hard work we have put in for our students. “To compete in a competition of this stature and finish as the top team makes me very proud and shows that our academy is going in the right direction.” Competitor of the day was nine-year-old Liam Veras who won four golds on his own. His successes came in the under 10 team kumite where he was joined by brother Luca and Ismail Cinar; in the 10-13 years team kata competing alongside brother Luan, 10, and 11-year-old Seyhan Cinar; under-10 years individual kata; and in the under-10 individual kumite. Chasing him for top honours was Seyhan Cinar, who pulled off a hat-trick of wins following up his team kata and team kumite successes with victory in the individual kata up to 7th kyu for 10-13 year age groups. The other golden moments came from Luca Veras in the under-8 kumite and Luan Veras in the individual kata for 10-13 years. 34 NEWS FROM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 6 – 12 APRIL 2015
