David Perry, 52, of Gayton House, Chiltern Road, Bow, committed the offences on January 27, 2013 in Highbury and on May 4, 2014 in South Woodford. Both his victims were women in their 20s who had been out socialising before getting into Perry’s taxi and falling asleep, only to wake up and find him assaulting them. On July 9, 2014, DNA evidence from both offences was linked to one person but did not match any existing profiles on the police database. Police investigations led them to a cab registered to Perry, who had no previous convictions. He was arrested at his home STAFF celebrated the 50th anniversary of the council at the Town Hall last Wednesday, April 1. It was 50 years to the day since the metropolitan boroughs of Poplar, Stepney and Bethnal Green merged to become the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Long-serving members of staff joined in the festivities including Elaine Commons, who began working at the council in 1975 as a junior entrant. She now works as a finance and information manager. Elained said: “I’ve worked in many different jobs across the council – even in dog licensing. It’s been so nice to be joined by my colleagues throughout the years to celebrate this achievement.” Speaking before cutting a special cake designed by Cakes & Gateau in Brick Foundation learning change THREE head teachers have jointly decided to take foundation learning students into their schools from September, after changes to special educational needs provision at Cambridge Heath Sixth Form College. The heads of Oaklands, Morpeth and Swanlea schools said they made the decision so students with special needs were not isolated. It would also mean a senior member of staff was on site at all times to monitor them in the same way as other students. The three schools feed into the sixth form college, based at the Wessex Centre in Bethnal Green, where the heads said there had been staffing changes. But many parents are unhappy with the move, among them Emma Price, whose son Bobby is autistic, and who called the closure “morally wrong”. A council spokesman said the authority was in discussion with the schools and the parents of the young people affected. 6 – 12 APRIL 2015 N E W S F R OM TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL AND YOUR COMMUNITY 3
