For your information Parking to pest control, housing to hate crime turn to pages 18 & 19 Useful information Walkabouts to ease concerns News from Andy Bamber, the council’s head of safer communities EARLIER this month we launched our second series of community safety walkabouts. The first series of walkabouts took place earlier this year and was a great success, helping us to focus on the community safety issues that mattered to residents. This is why we felt it was important to do a second series. The route for each walkabout is designed to take in the key crime and anti-social behaviour concerns for those particular areas, to look at actions that have already been taken to address these problems, and to think about what more needs to be done. The events are interactive, and allow residents to discuss the crime and anti-social behaviour issues that matter to them, with the people responsible for fixing them. There was a good turn-out for the launch event, with residents and professionals joining the mayor and deputy mayor at the Aberfeldy Neighbourhood Centre before walking a route which took in the Aberfeldy Estate, Aberfeldy Street, Spey Street, the Lansbury Estate and Fitzgerald House. The event showed how our joint partnership approach is working. I spoke to many residents and shop owners who were very pleased with how the council, police and housing associations are working together to make our neighbourhoods safer. A plan for the council and partners, based on feedback from those who attended, has been put together to make sure the issues raised are properly dealt with – and this will happen for every walkabout. Once again we are holding an event in every ward in the Andy Bamber borough. If you are interested in getting involved, keep an eye out for the details in East End Life. There will be 17 walkabouts in total so there will be a local one for all residents. With the clocks going back last weekend, Diwali on November 3 and bonfire night on Tuesday, I’d like to remind residents of how they can stay safe during this enjoyable season. Remember that when people are building bonfires, it is more likely that rubbish bags, recy - cling boxes and bulk rubbish items could be used as fuel for a fire. Don’t leave items outside your front door, in communal areas or outside bin rooms. This applies to items you want as much as those you don’t. If you are planning your own garden fireworks display this year, make sure you only buy fireworks marked with BS 7114 or that have a CE mark written on the box, and check the fireworks are suitable for the size of area you plan to use them in. Always report people who are acting anti-socially with fireworks to the police on 101 (nonemergency) or 999 (emergency). Remember that fireworks are explosives and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Community walkabouts planned Community safety walkabouts will be held in all 17 wards for residents to raise issues of concern.
