The proposals for ‘Med City’ include a life sciences institute, a 24-hour campus, new buildings and facilities – housing education, research, accommodation, leisure, clinical treatments and business start-ups. Situated between the university’s current research and teaching facilities in Mile End and the Royal London Hospital, the medical metropolis is a key element of the wider vision for Whitechapel. Also in the pipeline is the second phase of redevelopment works to construct a six-storey dental hospital for Barts Health NHS Trust. The new hospital is being built on a site next to the Royal London Hospital and will provide patients with a modern and spacious environment with access to the latest medical equipment and treatment methods. Already home to the Royal London teaching hospital as well as renowned institutes for medicine, dentistry and research, these further developments in Whitechapel will see the area set firmly on the academic map. And the Queen Mary institute, due to open in 2017, will be important for local residents as well as the university. “Life sciences at Queen Mary is concerned with addressing big public health issues – from diabetes to smoking-related illnesses to obesity – focusing on understanding the causes of disease, prevention, improving diagnosis and developing treatments,” a spokeswoman said. She said the long-term impact of the proposed development would include improved health for east Londoners and a contribution to the regeneration of the Whitechapel area. In March, Mayor Lutfur Rahman launched the Whitechapel Vision, a development masterplan for the area, which includes Med City and the new hospital as well as the creation of a civic hub with local services at its heart. The institute will draw on research from the existing science and medical faculties at Queen Mary, and will work closely with Barts Health NHS Trust. More than 1,000 researchers will be recruited, and sciencerelated courses will be expanded with an additional 1,500 student places.
