Since I had attended the Citywide event the week before, my deputy Cllr Ohid Ahmed took part in the service at East London Central Synagogue in Nelson Street. The event featured music, poetry and reflections on building bridges in the community from different perspectives including Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Catholic, Sikh, Bahai and Buddhist. This forms part of a programme of events up to February 4. In many way s t h e s e events epitomise the One Tower Hamlets approach that we have taken in Tower Hamlets – we respect our different histories while valuing our similarities, and I am proud of the community cohesion that we have in our borough. It is something that is at the heart of what’s special about Britain and needs preserving. I welcome the fact that the police, local electoral staff and the national Electoral Commission have taken steps to ensure the forthcoming elections are free and fair. It is good news that all parties have indicated they will sign up to the new protocol. Last week a tea dance for over- 50s was held to signpost services and was an opportunity to bring older residents together. More than 400 people came out to dance at the Troxy. Three more events will be held over the coming weeks – see page 10. As well as consulting on our budget proposals for 2014-15, the council has received many innovative ideas from our 17 community ward forums on how to spend the £10,000 allocated to each area. This truly is putting power into residents’ hands. Tower Hamlets has a longstanding Chinese community and I wish all those celebrating Chinese New Year best wishes for the coming 12 months. Mayor Lutfur Rahman took to the dance floor at the council’s New Year tea dance held at the Troxy, Limehouse, last Monday, January 27. The mayor said one of the highlights for him was meeting 92-year-old Patricia Thompson (pictured on page 14), who was mayor of Tower Hamlets in 1981-82. ■ See pages 10 & 11. The scheme has helped residents to ensure they are getting the best value out of their energy providers by joining up with the Londonwide switching campaign, the Big London Energy Switch.
