Sensei Raphael Veras saw his son Luan grab two gold medals and two titles – on the way beating brother Liam, who himself picked up a silver and a bronze. Then Raphael’s wife Patricia Perote completed a great day by joining fellow orange belt Bernadette Urrutia and another mum, Dawn Kavanagh, in winning gold medals. Sensei Raphael took 13 members to the championships and came back with a total haul of ten medals – three gold, two silver and five bronze. Urrutia, who lives near Devons Road, Bow, and has been doing karate since 2009, won the gold medal and the senior team fighting title alongside Perote and Kavanagh. Then she picked up the bronze in the veterans individual category. Liam, eight, started the ball rolling by winning silver in the 9-and-under individual kata then he and Luan, nine, with Emre Oner, also nine, won gold in the 9-and-under team fight. Liam then won bronze losing in the semi-finals to Luan, who took gold and was crowned champion in the 9-and-under individual fight. Perote then put up a good fight to win a bronze in the senior female individual kumite for the +68 kilos open grade 18- plus, Urrutia took the bronze in the veterans individual fight while Luke Kavanagh and Archie Gemmell won bronze in the 10-11 years team fight. Paddy Gemmell, nine, went one better than she did last year winning silver in the 9-yearsand under individual fight category and Lucienne Brown, ten, also put on a great show in the semi-finals and won bronze in the 10-11 years individual fight. Luca Veras, six, Andrew Egbunike, nine, and Shaida Khalik all put on good shows.
