All over the editorials, and social media, people have been discussing their understanding of what happened. It has been reported that Williams had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and was receiving medication for it. It has sparked discussions highlighting misunderstanding of depression and mental health, and fear of, and discomfort around, disability. At Real, we understand disability through and through. And not just in a medical way, but really understanding what it means and feels like to be disabled, and the impact it has on all aspects of your life. That’s because 100 per cent of our board of trustees and 75 per cent of our client-facing staff are disabled people. We think this makes us unique in the borough. We will support anyone who is disabled or has a long-term condition. We offer a range of services, including information, advice, independent advocacy and a range of other projects. We give you updates on our work every six weeks in this column, but you can find out much more by contacting us in any of the ways detailed below. New training for disabled a n d o l d e r p e o p l e o n managing others HAVE you ever wondered about getting money to manage your own care and support, instead of having a directly provided service from an agency? Maybe you were put off by the thought of having to manage someone, and were worried about your legal responsibilities. Real will be running some free training which is open to anyone who currently receives social care, whether directly or through a direct payment. We recently ran a consultation with local disabled people, and these courses have been created to cover the issues identified. They are an opportunity to learn more about being an employer, and also meet others who employ their own staff. The first two sessions are: Being a Good Employer – Wednesday, September 10 from 2pm; Emp loyment L aw – Wednesday, September 29 from 10.30am. Both will be held at Jack Dash House, 2 Lawn House Close, Isle of Dogs.
