Theatre Royal Stratford is running political satire Spoiling, set in the days after the vote on September 18. The play was a hit in Edinburgh, winning the Fringe First award from The Scotsman for the best new work. Written by John McCann and directed by Orla O’Loughlin, artistic director at Edinburgh’s Travers Theatre, Spoiling stars Gabriel Quigley as Fiona, Scotland’s new Foreign Minister designate, and Richard Clements as Henderson, cautious, political bureaucrat given the task of keeping his party’s new minister on message. Just hours before a keynote speech outlining the new relationship with the former UK, the play exposes a rift within the ranks. Pursued by a harassed party worker, the clock is ticking and Fiona has a decision to make – toe the party line or take back control. Kerry Michael, artistic director of Theatre Royal Stratford East, said: “If there’s one play you want to see that helps you get inside the skin of what’s going on in Scotland, this is it.” Performances run until Saturday, September 13 on Tuesday to Saturday at 8pm with Saturday & Sunday matinees at 3pm. Tickets are £15, £10 concs. To book call the box office on 8534 0310, visit www.stratfordeast.com or book in person at Theatre Royal Stratford East, Gerry Raffles Square, E15. The play is suitable for ages 13-plus. East End Life has joined up with Theatre Royal Stratford to offer two pairs of tickets to readers.
