A response to deadly disease The Queen Elizabeth Children’s Hospital started life as the Dispensary for Women and Children in Virginia Road, Bethnal Green, following a cholera epidemic. Property Work to start on 188 homes Hospital has been unoccupied for 20 years BY JESSICA ODUBAYO AFTER remaining vacant for almost 20 years, redevelopment of the former Queen Elizabeth Children’s Hospital in Bethnal Green is set to start this September. Plans approved by Tower Hamlets Council and the mayor of London will provide 188 new homes – 72 of which will be for affordable rent or shared ownership. The remaining 116 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be available for private sale, under the name Mettle & Poise. Planning approval followed more than 12 months of consultation by the project team, which included HTA Design LLP and Savills Planning, who worked closely with the council, the mayor of London’s office and the community. Thirty per cent of the homes will be designed as family accommodation and ten per cent will be wheelchair adaptable. The historic front façade of the original hospital, in Hackney Road, will remain as a permanent reminder of the site’s heritage. Representatives are due to join Richard Blakeway, London deputy mayor for housing, land and property, at an event to mark the start of the project on Wednesday, September 17. Project partners Family Mosaic and Rydon are leading the scheme which is expected to be completed by 2017. see below Running things Tower Hamlets Community Housing was formed in 2000, when 1,249 council homes were transferred. www.thch.org.uk A youngster gets to grips with the tug o’ war rope Families enjoy sack races and barbecue at estate’s fun day A REQUEST by residents for a sports day on the Barnardo Gardens Estate in Shadwell came to fruition on August 20 with an afternoon of fun sports and games. The fun day and barbecue was organised by landlord Tower Hamlets Community Housing (THCH) with the aim of bringing families together and giving them the chance to get to know each other better. While most competitors were under 12, some of the mums also challenged each other to a sack race. Alexandra Lilley from St Paul’s, Shadwell, who volunteered at the basketball challenge, said: “It was a brilliant community fun day with bungee runs, henna tattoos, sports races and free popcorn... great work.” Abul Zahangir from THCH said: “It was great to see so many families come out and take part and the races certainly brought out the competitive nature of some of our residents.” How the flats will look Sack racing raised some smiles WE URGENTLY REQUIRE PROPERTIES ACROSS LONDON LANDLORDS LET US TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF RENTING OR SELLING YOUR PROPERTY FREE property valuation find out how much your property is worth.
