A centre of excellence The London Chest Hospital, founded in 1848 with support from Prince Albert, became world-renowned for the treatment of heart and lung diseases, particularly pulmonary tuberculosis. Visa apprentice in line for award A SHADWELL WOMAN has reached the finals of a competition recognising some of the UK’s best apprentices and their employers. Shaida Khanom, who works in public relations, has been shortlisted for the higher apprentice of the year award at the 2014 National Apprenticeship Awards. Shaida, 20, who began her apprenticeship with Visa Europe last October, has beaten more than 1,000 others to get to the final three. She has also been offered a permanent role at Visa. Shaida said: “Never did I imagine that I would be working in public relations. “Visa Europe has given me the foundations to build a successful career. “I love what I do and every day I’m challenged with exciting projects, each of them Shaida Khanom helping me to develop into a professional businesswoman.” Suggesting them as a good alternative to higher education, she added: “Apprenticeships build character, knowledge, expertise, maturity and the skills needed by tomorrow’s business leaders.” The awards ceremony will take place during The Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC on November 13. Celebration at hospital RESIDENTS, patients and staff are invited to an event celebrating the 166-year history of the London Chest Hospital as it prepares to start a new chapter. The hospital, in Bethnal Green, is due to become part of the new state-of-the-art Barts Heart Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City. The event, on Saturday, September 6, will be a chance to celebrate the hospital’s achievements and look forward to a new beginning for cardiac services. Attractions include a children’s entertainer, a steel band and a barbecue in the afternoon. During the evening, a buffet see below will be served and a DJ will provide music. There will also be a bar. The event will take place from 2pm until late in the hospital grounds in Bonner Road. Tickets cost £5 per adult and under-16s can enter free. Social welfare law charity Lasa has launched the site www.advicelocal.org.uk which provides details of advice services and other information resources. 100km cycle ride WORSHIPPERS at the East London Mosque in Whitechapel are among those who will take part in a 100km cycle around London, stopping to pray at five mosques. Tour De Salah starts at the mosque in Whitechapel Road at 4pm on September 6. The ride is organised by the Muslim Agency for Development Education.
